History Of Golf
Golf history is a bit vague about its exact origins. Anyway, golf is one game where there are no standard playing areas; a golf course design varies from one course to another course. In other words, no two golf courses are exactly the same. Golf history is a bit interesting because it claims to have other various provenance from early Dutch to early Scottish words.
The origin of golf can be traced with a bit of certainty to 12th century Scotland with founding of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. Anything earlier than that tends to shroud in the mists of history the real origin of golf. There were mentioned of ancient texts in China and Egypt about some games similar to golf today but the modern version originated in Scotland.
The early golf balls were made of leather. Depending on what country its earlier versions were played, some golfers used round stones or wooden balls instead. Early golf balls varied in sizes too in a considerable manner depending on what was easily available in the area.
Golf development is convoluted because there were no governing world bodies early on. In a sense, the only unifying aspect of golf are its strict set of rules. Early golf clubs had only 13 rules but there are currently more than double that number in today’s modern golf. The rules attempt to cover all conceivable situations that may occur playing golf. Early golf clubs are The Musselburgh Old Links Golf Course (Scotland), Royal Blackheath Golf Club (England), Royal Montreal Club (Canada) and the Burgess Golf Club (Scotland).
Golf development is also reflected in the way golf courses evolved. Earlier golf courses had a different number of holes to be played, some with eleven holes (for a total of 22 holes) until two holes were combined to make the present 9 holes for a total of 18 standard holes (9 going out and 9 back in).
